Minute's silence and book of condolence in Nottingham to mark 30th anniversary of Hillsborough disaster

Nottingham will mark the 30th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster with a minute’s silence.

Ninety-six fans died in a crush at the Leppings Lane end of the stadium in April 1989 as the FA Cup semi-final between Nottingham Forest and Liverpool began.

On Monday, April 15, people are invited to join the minute's silence taking place in front of the Council House in the Old Market Square at 3.06pm - the time when the FA Cup semi-final was stopped.

Football fans are being encouraged to wear their team’s colours, whoever they support.

A book of condolence will be available for people to sign at the Council House and the building will be lit in red and white, the team colours of both Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, on the evenings of April 14 and 15.

Representatives from Nottingham Forest and Notts County will be at the minute's silence, with the Lord Mayor and the Sheriff of Nottingham also in attendance.

John McGovern, club ambassador for Nottingham Forest, said: “The tragic events from that day should never be forgotten.

"I’m sure the Forest family will take this opportunity to pay their tributes for not only the supporters that never returned, but also the family and friends who were affected by what happened.”

Ian Curryer, chief executive of Nottingham City Council, said: "Many people from Nottingham were at Hillsborough 30 years ago and witnessed the tragedy that took place there.

"Then and now we share the grief felt by the families affected and the city of Liverpool. It’s important that we stand together with them on 15th April to remember the 96 people who lost their lives.”

Earlier this month a jury was unable to reach a verdict on gross negligence manslaughter charges against Hillsborough match commander David Duckenfield. His lawyers have said they will oppose an application from prosecutors for a retrial.
