Melbourne playwright Anna Barnes (who won the Patrick White Playwrights award in 2013) pulls Sophocles’ Electra into the present day, and puts the storytelling into the mouths of teenagers.
A father sacrifices the life of his eldest daughter – for the common good, according to him – after snatching her away during a TV ad break. It’s the type of thing that might mess up a family – turn mother against father, son against mother, sister against sister, et cetera.
The modernised myth mingles eternal obsessions with those of this day. Bloodshed goes hand in hand with Bacardi Breezers, Facebook, and out of the wreckage comes a family, irreversibly shattered by grief and guilt.
