Minsky's Showbar in Cardiff to close after 25 years

It's been entertaining Welsh drag-lovers for more than a quarter of a century, but now Minsky's Showbar in Cardiff is closing.

And the owners of the bar, which opens every weekend for cabaret shows, claim it's because the landlord of the building has refused to renew the lease.

The bar celebrated its 25th anniversary last autumn and will close for the final time on Saturday, May 9.

Current owner of the club, Owen Sendell, who co-runs the club with Nathan Barker, said he was gutted the lease would not be renewed and that they were hoping to find alternative premises in the city centre.

Owen and Nathan were left the club following the death of its previous owner, Andy Jones, in 2018 and have managed to get the club on track and debt-free.

"I feel pig sick about it," said Owen. "It's something we wanted to carry on for Andy, it's been going 25 years, 26 this year, and before that was Stage Door.

"Our final night will be on May 9 and then we'll have a fortnight to clear down everything in there."

If the club on Cathedral Walk has to shut before then due to the coronavirus epidemic, Owen is hoping that it will just be for two weeks so they can open back up in April.

"It's awful, not just for me, but for the staff and the people who come here," said Owen, who employs five permanent staff at the club.

Minsky's host, Gavin Wilson, aka Opal Fruits, has been a customer of the club as well as worked there, during the past 14 years.

"I'm absolutely gutted," said Gavin. "It's been a huge part of mine, and other people's lives for so long, so for it to be taken away from us..."

The team is hoping to find other premises for the club.

Owen added: "We've been looking around but there's nothing in Cardiff we can afford at the moment."

For the final night on Saturday, May 9, Minksy's will be putting on a cabaret show with performances from Opal Fruits, Jolene Dover, Dr Bev, and Mary Golds.

WalesOnline has contacted the landlord of the Minsky's Showbar building for comment.
