Minor injuries unit to re-open after a year of closure due to a shortage of staff

A minor injuries unit will reopen after a year of closure due to a staffing issue. The minor injuries unit at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon suddenly closed in September 2021 because of staff shortages.

It was then announced in October 2021 that the unit would remain closed until early 2022. However 13 months after its initial closure the unit had only re-opened for just two mornings a week. The closure of the minor injuries unit meant people who live in the Cynon valley had to make an 18 mile journey to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil to visit the A&E department instead.

It was not clear what caused the staffing issues at the unit in Mountain Ash, but it appears the issue has now been resolved. On Wednesday, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board announced that the unit had now been given a date to re-open.

The minor injuries unit will open be open from Monday to Friday, operating between 9am and 5pm. The unit will operate on a walk-in basis.
