'Minor hernia repair' to keep Kansas coach Bill Self from rappelling at charity event

Kansas basketball coach Bill Self will not be rappelling down the 888 Lofts Building in downtown Lawrence, Kan., on Saturday morning as he'd originally planned.

Self, KU's 16th-year coach, announced on Friday that "unfortunately a minor hernia repair is going to sideline me tomorrow. The doctor says I need to wait a couple more weeks before jumping off any buildings. I will be there to watch our guys go over. Kurtis (Townsend, assistant coach), Jeremy (Case, video coordinator) and Hawk (former KU player Jeff Hawkins) are all going down the building for a good cause."

Self added: "Boys and Girls Club is a great organization and we want to be out there to support the kids. Cindy (Self's wife) and I are big fans of Boys and Girls Club and we will certainly make good on our fundraising goal ($10,000)."

Townsend, Hawkins and Case are slated to descend the building about 11 a.m. Other members of the community will begin rappelling at 9 a.m. Saturday. The event is a fundraiser for Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence.
