Mino Raiola releases Super League statement after Liverpool decision

Mino Raiola has declared that football players "must not suffer" after the widespread criticism and condemnation of the European Super League proposals.

One of the most powerful agents in world football, Raiola believes players should not be punished for the actions of club owners over the controversial new plans.

On Sunday night, it was announced that Liverpool - along with 12 other elite clubs including the Premier League's big six - had founded a new closed-shop continental competition called The Super League.

There has been a major backlash since, with supporters, pundits and even players and managers from respective clubs involved in the breakaway group having spoken out against the plans.

Governing football body UEFA have strongly voiced their opposition too and even threatened to exclude players involved with the Super League clubs from playing in international matches.

In response Raiola, who is no stranger to controversy himself, shared a statement on Instagram from The Football Forum - an international movement of football agents and players of which he is president.

The post reads: "The Football Forum (TFF) stands to protect and secure player's rights. Players must not suffer negative consequences because of developments in football.

"Players have not been a part of any talks, have had no say in this week's events and nonetheless they are being used in this discussion.

"One point, however, is clear and confirms what we have been saying for years: the current system is not sustainable – it's time for change in a way that makes sense for all members of the football world.

"TFF favours a more transparent, democratic and modern football system which we believe is in the best interests of players, fans and the game in general.

"We will fight for the rights of players in any system, making sure players' voices are heard and views taken into consideration. Players, after all, are the most important part of the game."
