Minnesota rider believed to be first to die from COVID-19 after attending Sturgis rally

MINNEAPOLIS _ A participant in last month's Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota is among the 1,830 people in Minnesota who have died of COVID-19, the Minnesota Department of Health reported Wednesday.

The rider was a man in his 60s with underlying health conditions who was hospitalized and placed in intensive care following his infection with the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Minnesota health officials have identified at least 49 participants in the Sturgis event who have tested positive for the infection. Several other states have reported infections among Sturgis participants as well.

One Minnesotan with a confirmed infection spread the virus at a recent wedding, state infectious disease director Kris Ehresmann said earlier this week.

The state on Wednesday confirmed another 761 lab-confirmed infections, bringing its total in the pandemic to 77,085 confirmed infections _ with an untold number of additional infections being undetected in people who experienced mild or no symptoms. The state also reported seven deaths on Wednesday.
