Minnesota ICE latest: Trump says ‘we’re going to de-escalate a little bit’ after shooting but faces MAGA backlash

President Donald Trump has said his federal immigration forces will “de-escalate a little bit” in Minnesota after the fatal shootings of protesters Alex Pretti and Renee Good provoked outrage.

The president was speaking to Fox News after delivering an address on affordability in Des Moines, Iowa, and was careful to stress that the shift was not a “pullback,” mindful that ICE’s operations still have strong support among his MAGA base and that any retreat could trigger a backlash.

Trump moved Monday to place border czar Tom Homan in charge of his illegal immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, removed Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino and held crisis talks at the White House with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Also Tuesday, the president was less than sympathetic towards Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar after she was sprayed with a substance from a syringe by a man at a town hall meeting, telling reporters he had not seen video of the attack but that Omar “probably had herself sprayed, knowing her.

Police tackled her assailant at the scene and took him into custody before Omar resumed speaking. She had earlier called for Noem to “resign or face impeachment” over the killing of Pretti.

Trump ignores Minnesota uproar and tries sticking to economy in Iowa

09:30 , Joe Sommerlad

During his speech at the Horizon Events Center in Clive, Iowa, yesterday, the president brushed over the recent chaos in Minnesota and did not even directly address the killing of 37-year-old Alex Pretti that has sparked outrage across the country.

Instead, reading from a teleprompter, he focused mostly on a defense of his administration’s economic record.

Trump boasted that the American economy is “booming,” even as surveys show consumer confidence hitting the lowest levels in a decade and the job market cooling into a “low hire, low fire” labor environment due to continued uncertainty over the long-term effects of his policies.

He also bragged about agreements his administration has made under which countries will import large quantities of corn-based ethanol fuel – an important product for Iowa’s farmers – even though his use of tariffs and threats against Greenland and other Nato allies has led to many of those handshake deals being suspended or delayed.

Here’s a full report from Andrew Feinberg.

Donald Trump says his forces will ‘de-escalate a little bit’ following Minneapolis shootings

09:12 , Joe Sommerlad

President Donald Trump has said his federal immigration forces will “de-escalate a little bit” in Minnesota after the fatal shootings of protesters Alex Pretti and Renee Good provoked outrage.

The president was speaking to Fox News after delivering an address on affordability in Des Moines, Iowa, and was careful to stress that the shift was not a “pullback,” mindful that ICE’s operations still have strong support among his MAGA base and that any retreat could trigger a backlash.

A White House insider has already told The Daily Mail that the president backing down in the northern state would amount to the worst betrayal of Republican voters since George HW Bush rowed back on his no-new-taxes pledge in the early 1990s.

“If Trump backs down on deportations, he might as well pack it in,” the source said. “It will be the biggest betrayal to the base since George HW Bush raised taxes.”

Trump moved Monday to place border czar Tom Homan in charge of his illegal immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, removed Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino and held crisis talks at the White House with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Elsewhere in his interview with Fox’s Will Cain, the president downplayed events in the state as “hoopla,” reminded viewers that Pretti was armed when he was killed, and lamented his loss of support from Good’s bereaved parents.

AOC calls on Trump and Vance to 'look in the mirror' after Ilhan Omar town hall incident

08:00 , Rachel Dobkin

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called on President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance to “look in the mirror” after her Democratic colleague Ilhan Omar was sprayed with an unknown substance at a Minneapolis town hall Tuesday night.

“It is not a coincidence that after days of President Trump and VP Vance putting Rep. Omar in their crosshairs with slanderous public attacks, she gets assaulted at her town hall,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X. “Thank God she is okay. If they want leaders to take down the temp, they need to look in the mirror.”

The president has repeatedly criticized Omar, calling her “garbage” as he targets Somali immigrants in Minnesota.

Most recently, Trump said in a speech in Iowa earlier Tuesday that immigrants “have to be proud, not like Ilhan Omar” to enter the country.

On Monday, Vance pushed back on a statement from Omar regarding a letter Attorney General Pam Bondi sent to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. In the letter, which was shared by The New York Times, Bondi asks Walz to turn over voter rolls “to confirm that Minnesota’s voter registration practices comply with federal law.”

Omar claimed the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minnesota was really about “rigging elections.”

“‘ICE will leave Minnesota if you hand over your voter rolls’ tells you everything you need to know. This was never about immigration or fraud. It was always about rigging elections,” she wrote on X Sunday.

Vance replied with his own accusation: “‘We really want illegal aliens to vote in elections and will riot to ensure that it is so.’"

A spokesperson from the Department of Justice told Fox News Digital that Democrats were “shamelessly lying” about the contents of Bondi’s letter.

Democrats appear to suggest that Trump is to blame after a man 'assaulted' Ilhan Omar

06:00 , Rachel Dobkin

Democrats on the House Homeland Security Committee have appeared to suggest that President Donald Trump is to blame after a man sprayed Congresswoman Ilhan Omar with an unknown substance at a Minneapolis town hall Tuesday night.

“Trump attacks Rep. Omar every day for doing her job instead of doing his own. Now a violent, deranged man assaulted her at a town hall. It’s not a coincidence,” the Democrats wrote on X.

The president has repeatedly criticized Omar, calling her “garbage” as he targets Somali immigrants in Minnesota.

Most recently, Trump said in a speech in Iowa earlier Tuesday that immigrants “have to be proud, not like Ilhan Omar” to enter the country.

Alex Pretti shooting witness says she still has not been contacted by the feds

05:30 , Rachel Dobkin

A woman who filmed the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti at the hands of Border Patrol has said she still has not been contacted by the federal government.

When asked in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper what that tells her about the situation, Stella Carlson said, “That they’re protecting themselves and they don’t care about the truth of what happened.”

The Department of Homeland Security said Pretti approached federal officers with a handgun in Minneapolis over the weekend and that, “fearing for his life,” an agent fired “defensive shots.” Footage of the incident appears to show Pretti with a phone in his hand, not a gun. A gun was tucked into his waistband, according to the footage.

DHS review doesn't say Alex Pretti brandished a gun during fatal shooting

05:15 , Rachel Dobkin

A review by Customs and Border Protection’s internal watchdog did not say that Alex Pretti brandished a gun during a confrontation with federal agents that resulted in his death, according to an email sent to Congress that was reviewed by The New York Times.

Pretti, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was fatally shot by Border Patrol in Minneapolis over the weekend.

The Department of Homeland Security said a person approached officers with a handgun during a targeted operation against an “illegal alien wanted for violent assault.” According to footage of the incident, Pretti had his gun tucked in his waistband.

05:00 , Rachel Dobkin

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has called for every single Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent to leave Minnesota immediately.

“Alex Pretti did not deserve to die. Renee Nicole Good did not deserve to die,” Schumer wrote on X Tuesday, referring to the two fatal shootings involving federal immigration agents in Minneapolis this past month. “Enough is enough. ALL of ICE out of Minnesota now.”

Schumer has also signaled he will not support a House-passed spending bill to keep the government open because of the funding it gives to the Department of Homeland Security.

“I will vote no on any legislation that funds ICE until it is reined in and overhauled, and Senate Democrats are overwhelmingly united on this issue,” he said on the Senate floor Tuesday.

02:20 , Isabel Keane

Former President Joe Biden has slammed the killing of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis, saying the shooting “betrays our most basic values as Americans.”

Biden joins fellow former Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton to decry Saturday’s fatal shooting of Pretti, as well as the January 7 killing of Renee Nicole Good, calling for “full, fair and transparent investigations” into both.

“We are not a nation that guns down our citizens in the street. We are not a nation that allows our citizens to be brutalized for exercising their constitutional rights. We are not a nation that tramples the 4th Amendment and tolerates our neighbors being terrorized,” Biden wrote in a statement on X.

Trump ignores Minnesota uproar and tries sticking to economy in Iowa as Republicans call for Noem’s head

01:40 , Andrew Feinberg

President Donald Trump’s first stop on the long road to the 2026 midterm elections ended after he spoke for just over an hour with hardly any mention of the firestorm consuming his administration over the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old Minnesota man by a Border Patrol officer just days ago.

Speaking at the Horizon Events Center in Clive, Iowa, the president’s remarks, which he appeared to read directly from a teleprompter while eschewing the stream-of-consciousness “weave” that characterizes most of his public appearances, focused mostly on a defense of his administration’s economic record.

He claimed he’d spearheaded “the most dramatic one year turnaround of any country in history in terms of the speed” over his first year back in power while boasting that the American economy is “booming” even as surveys show American consumer confidence hitting the lowest levels in a decade and the job market cooling into a “low hire, low fire” labor environment due to continued uncertainty over the effects his policies will have over the long term.

“I think that what she's done in Minnesota should be disqualifying. She should be out of a job. And I mean, really, it's just, it's just amateurish.”

Tillis told The Independent that she had squandered Trump’s goodwill on immigration and securing the border.

“I mean, there's no question that we won the election there, and now these people like Noem are squandering the opportunity to be able to codify that good policy and maybe even get to a reasonable discussion about immigration reform,” he said.

He also blasted border patrol official Greg Bovino.

“Bovino, whatever his name is, he needs to go back to California, get us retirement papers and go. These people are amateurs. They got to de-escalate there and treat these communities with some respect.”
