A Minneapolis high rise fire has left five people dead and at least four more injured, after it started Wednesday morning.

Firefighters in the Minnesota city say that the blaze is currently under control, according to a tweet from the Minneapolis Fire Department sent at 6am local time.

The blaze prompted a two-alarm response from firefighters, who were called to the scene around 4.30am local time.

The blaze at one point reached the 14th floor of the building.

The Minneapolis Fire Department says that one of those injured was a first responder, but that they were taken to the hospital with what appears to be non-life threatening injuries.

The identities of the victims was not immediately disclosed.

Minneapolis and the surrounding area have been facing winter storm warnings in recent days, as many parts of the midwest have been pummelled with snow.
