The Industry Ministry is stressing the need for businesses to follow the bio-, circular and green (BCG) economic development model and vowed to promote so-called "clean industries" with the ability to produce value-added products.
Global warming, which is blamed for an array of climate problems, provides a challenge to both the state and business in addition to the ongoing pandemic, Kobchai Sungsitthisawad, the ministry's permanent secretary, said at the 2021 Office of Industrial Economic Forum.
This makes BCG a more important concept.
BCG, which encourages manufacturers to adopt environmentally friendly production and design ways to increase their product value, will help the Thai economy achieve sustainable growth.
It also matches a goal of the 13th national economic and social development plan, scheduled to be carried out between 2023 and 2027.
The plan focuses on using innovations to reduce poverty, build a knowledge-based economy and promote value-added product development.
All of them should be translated into actions across industry.
The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand earlier said it would promote environmentally friendly industrial operations in the Eastern Economic Corridor, which will turn parts of Chon Buri, Rayong and Chachoengsao into a high-tech industrial hub.
Its Smart Park project in Rayong will not only be developed to serve S-curve industries but will also promote use of zero-emission vehicles as well as modern technologies for better energy management.
"Thailand also plans to develop targeted industries in order to use them to drive the domestic economy during the pandemic and economic slowdown," said Mr Kobchai.
Development of the electric vehicle industry is among the modern industries the government wants to emphasise.
