The health ministry has decided to identify airplane passengers who sat close to infected people when flying back to Japan and carefully monitor their activities after arrival. The measure will be implemented soon.
If a passenger from overseas tests positive for the novel coronavirus at airport quarantine, people who sat within two rows of them will be designated "possible" high-risk contacts. They must self-quarantine at home or at a designated facility for 14 days after entering Japan.
During that period, staff from the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry's Health Monitoring Center for Overseas Entrants will make video calls or visit them to ensure they remain quarantined.
The government also said Tuesday that it would ask returnees from Indonesia, Zambia and Kyrgyz to stay for 10 days at government-designated facilities, effective Friday, in an effort to prevent the spread of highly contagious variants.
