The Public Health Ministry has opened applications for qualified candidates seeking to represent Thailand in the race for the next director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat said a selection committee had been established under a cabinet resolution approved on June 12 to identify Thailand's nominee for the global health agency's top post.
The committee comprises three representatives from the Public Health Ministry and three from the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Applications opened on Tuesday and will close on July 17.
Mr Pattana encouraged qualified individuals to apply, describing the position as a significant opportunity to contribute to global health policy while enhancing Thailand's standing in international healthcare.
"If Thailand succeeds in securing the position, it will bring considerable benefits to the country's healthcare development in the future," he said.
He added that the government remained committed to promoting Thailand's public health achievements on the global stage and strengthening international cooperation to improve health security.
The selection result is expected to be announced in August, after which the cabinet will endorse the successful candidate as Thailand's official nominee.
According to the WHO, the current director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, began his second five-year term on Aug 16, 2022. It will end on Aug 15, 2027.
WHO member states have until Sept 24, 2026, to submit nominations. The next director-general will be appointed by the World Health Assembly in May of next year.
