Ministry of Defence operatives remove 'dummy' bomb which closed Scots railway line

An ‘unexploded bomb’ which was discovered on a building site in Barrhead – causing a railway line to close for most of the day – was actually a dud.

The find at the Duncarnock housing development on Springfield Road was a ‘dummy’ bomb and so was never going to explode.

Ministry of Defence operatives were called to the site around 10am on Thursday to assess the danger.

However, after hours analysing the discovery, they were relieved to find the “bomb” was not all it seemed and removed the object.

The Muirend to Neilston line was closed from 10am until 6.30pm as the railway track fell within an exclusion zone around the ‘bomb’.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called out to Springfield Road, Barrhead, at the request of Police Scotland, to a suspected item of ordnance.

“The item was deemed to not be ordnance and EOD left the scene.”

Work at the building site, a Taylor Wimpey development, was also called off for the day. Work was allowed to continue yesterday after the site was declared safe.

A Taylor Wimpey spokesperson said: “Following the discovery of unexploded ordnance by groundworkers working on our development in Barrhead, we can confirm that the Ministry of Defence was called to safely remove the ordnance from the site.

“Our first priority is the safety of our employees and subcontractors, as well as the general public in the surrounding area.”
