The grassroots economy is recovering as indicated by the number of newly registered motorcycles and farmers' income, according to the Fiscal Policy Office.
FPO spokesman Pornchai Theerawet said on Thursday that the number of newly registered motorcycles increased last month for the first time in seven months, by 3.9% year-on-year, compared with a 4% decline in July.
The sales of motorcycles indicated the income of rural and grassroots people and earlier the national economic recovery had not reached the grassroots, he said.
According to him, farm prices rose 8.1% last month and 11.1% in the first eight months of this year. Farmers' income increased 3.4% last month and 1.4% from January to August.
Last month, auto sales jumped 27.2% while pickup truck sales rose 23.7%, reflecting private investment. Consumer confidence surged 70.2%, the highest in 43 months. Cement sales grew 7.3% while construction material prices gained 3.3% and property transaction fees jumped 23.3%.
