Minister for Health Stephen Donnolly has confirmed that peopled aged 30 to 34 will be able to register for their Covid vaccine on Wednesday through the online portal.

The portal will open to the age group two days earlier than expected as the government accelerate the vaccine roll-out due to concerns over the spread of the Delta variant.

The registration will begin with people aged 34 allowed to register on Wednesday, July 6, followed by people aged 33 on Thursday, those aged 32 on Friday and so on.

Minister Donnelly has said that appointments to receive the jab for this age group will likely begin as soon as next week.

In a tweet, he said: "Update to registration for the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme.

“Registration for the 30-34 age group for an mRNA vaccine will now open tomorrow, Wednesday July 07.

“Appointments will follow in a matter of days with the first vaccinations for this group next week.”

Those aged 30 to 34 will be able to avail themselves of an mRNA vaccine from either Pfizer or Moderna.

Those registering from tomorrow will also be given the option to opt-in for an earlier dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Earlier today, head of the Health Service Executive Paul Reid announced that 69% of the adult population of Ireland have had their first dose of the vaccine.

In a tweet, he said: "There are now over 50% of the adult population fully vaccinated, with 69% had their Dose 1.

“A total of 4.42M vaccines administered to date with 245,000 completed last week. (In another tweet, Mr Reid corrected this figure to say 345,000 vaccines were administered last week.)

“We’re working hard to protect as many people as quickly as possible.”

Pharmacies also began administering the Janssen one-shot vaccine to those aged 18 to 34 on Monday.

Following the announcement last Friday from the government, pharmacies were inundated by calls from people anxious to receive the jab.

The HSE said it expects to receive another 200,000 doses of the Janssen vaccine later this month.

Paul Reid has said the acceleration of the roll-out could mean all adults in Ireland may be fully vaccinated by the end of August.
