Minister Simon Harris says Delta variant won't jeopardise return of college students to campuses

Higher and Further Education Minister Simon Harris has said he does not fear the Delta variant could jeopardise plans for students to get back to college campuses in September.

Minister Harris was speaking to reporters on Monday at Government Buildings and said the Government has already published its framework for getting people back to colleges safely.

He said the only question that remains unanswered is whether large scale lectures can return stating “we’ve yet to make a call on” that.

NPHET have warned that Ireland is on the cusp of a fourth wave of Covid-19 and the government is now in a race to get people vaccinated as quickly as possible.

College students have been studying remotely and have not been on campuses' for over one year.

When asked if he is worried about the Delta variant changing plans for students who are looking forward to returning to universities, Mr Harris said: “The short answer is no.

“We actually had really good news for college students with the changes to the NIAC advice in relation to vaccines accepted by the government last Tuesday.

“We’re already seeing, as of today, people of college age able to start to register for vaccines in a way they weren’t expecting to do for quite a number of weeks so our plan very much remains on track.”
