Minister Simon Coveney met with fiery backlash for voicing support for England in Euro 2020 semi-final

Minister for Foreign Affairs was hit with a social media backlash on Wednesday night after tweeting his support for England ahead of their Euro 2020 semi-final.

It came before England reached their first major final last night in 55 years following their win against Denmark.

Simon Kjaer's own-goal cancelled out Mikkel Damsgaard's superb free-kick in the first half before Harry Kane won it in extra-time.

And Coveney caused quite a stir when he threw his support behind the English team before the match started.

Taking to Twitter the Fine Gael politician wrote: "Good luck to England tonight. Best team in tournament so far, we wish our neighbours well!"

However as expected the tweet was met with a fiery reaction from Irish people who slammed the Minister.

One person wrote :"Most Irish are supporting Denmark Simon.

Another added: "What? The whole country is cheering on Denmark. Read the room Simon, read the room."

A third said: "Can't believe you are not supporting a fellow EU country tonight."

And another said: "Best team in tournament? Easy to see you either haven't watched much or you know nothing about football."

England will face Italy on Sunday on what is set to be a historic final.

Speaking after the win Raheem Sterling told ITV: “It was a top performance – we had to dig in deep after the first goal we conceded in the tournament, and we regrouped well and showed a good team spirit to come back and win the game.

“It was difficult going behind but we knew we had to stay patient – we knew with the legs we’ve got, the aggressiveness and the power we have in the team, it would be a matter of time before we broke them down.”

Unsurprisingly Sterling defended the penalty decision in his favour, adding: “I went into the box and he stuck his right leg out, and it touched my leg so it was a clear penalty.”

Despite the celebrations at Wembley, Sterling insisted the focus would almost immediately shift to the final against Italy.

“It’s another step in the right direction,” he added. “But once we’re back in the dressing room it’s over and we’ve got to focus on the weekend now. It’s step-by-step and that’s all we can do.”
