Minister issues 'important advice' as terror threat level raised to severe

The Home Office minister has issued "important advice" after the UK's terror threat level was increased.

The level has been raised to "severe" following the bomb blast at Liverpool Women's Hospital - meaning an attack is deemed to be "highly likely".

Damian Hinds appeared on today's edition of Good Morning Britain and explained what this means for the UK public.

He said: "We talk about people being alert rather than alarmed. It's not about changing our daily lives. It is about that heightened vigilance.

"Obviously anyone with information about this incident, please be in touch with North West and Merseyside Police - or you can always contact Crimestoppers anonymously.

"But more broadly. If people are suspicious and something doesn't look right, please be in touch. Law enforcement relies on everybody's vigilance to support them in their work."

Ed Balls praised the guidance as "important advice" while Susanna Reid probed the minister on how the terror attack was able to happen.

Counter Terrorism Detectives leading the investigation have confirmed the name of the person they believed to have died in the attack as 32-year-old Emad Al Swealmeen.

Emad Al Swealmeen was briefly taken in by Christian volunteers Malcolm and Elizabeth Hitchcott - and Susanna asked whether the man suspect was known to government security.

Mr Hinds refused to speculate on a live investigation but said strenuous security checks are in place to identify at risk individuals.

He said: "The reality is you can't always be pinpoint accurate but security services strive to do as much as possible to identify individuals who might be at risk."

Anyone who has any information can call 0161 856 1027 quoting Liverpool Women's Hospital Incident.

Details can be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITVHub
