Minister for Sport 'optimistic' that capacity at sporting events will be at 100% very soon

Minister for Sport, Jack Chambers, has given a positive update for the sporting industry ahead of the October 22 easing of restrictions.

Although no decisions have been finalised in relation to the return of spectators at 100% capacity events, Mr. Chambers has said he is 'positive and optimistic' that changes will be made in line with a return to normal life.

Speaking to Newstalk this afternoon about the current capacity restrictions in place, he said; “I am positive and optimistic we will see a further increase.

“I think if you look at the general Covid figures and the huge positivity around the vaccination roll-out, I am positive and optimistic we will see that reach 100 per cent.

“But that will be subject to obviously a Government decision in the week prior to the 22nd.”

While there are a number of things that have to be clarified in line with the highly-anticipated relaxing of measures, there are many aspects that are definitely changing on that day.

From Friday, October 22, rules around physical distance will be gone as well as the requirement of wearing masks outdoors and in indoor private settings.

The limit on the number of people allowed to attend indoor and outdoor events and activities will be dropped as well as the restrictions on religious or civil ceremonies.

The number of people allowed to meet in private homes and gardens will also be unlimited as the remaining restrictions ease.

People will no longer need certification of vaccination, immunity, or testing as a condition for gaining access to any activities or events, with the exception of international travel.

Just two measures will remain in place in order to keep those most vulnerable safe. They are the need to self isolate if you develop any known symptoms associated with Covid-19, and masks must still be worn in healthcare settings, indoor retail, and on public transport.
