Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly says alcohol minimum unit pricing designed to 'reduce death'

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has welcomed the new minimum unit pricing on alcohol that came into effect today.

Under the new rules, different alcohol products cannot be sold for less than the set minimum price.

In Ireland, one standard drink contains 10 grams of alcohol and the minimum price for one standard drink will now be €1.

Ireland is one of the first countries in the world to introduce the measure. Scotland was the first in Europe to make the move, back in 2018.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said he "looks forward" to the measure working here.

He said: “Today Ireland joins a small number of countries in the world to introduce minimum pricing.

"This measure is designed to reduce serious illness and death from alcohol consumption and to reduce the pressure on our health services from alcohol related conditions. It worked in Scotland and I look forward to it working here.”
