Minister for Health says R rate in Ireland 'has fallen' after coronavirus cases scare

The R rate has fallen back toward 1 after a jump last week, the Minister for Health has said.

Speaking in the Dail today, Stephen Donnelly said "things have stabilised" after fears last week the coronavirus cases were set for a huge jump.

It is now believed the R rate is between 1 and 1.4 - last week it was estimated it could be as high as 1.8.

The minister said that 51,000 tests have been carried out in the last week with a 0.3% positivity rate.

While there has been a resurgence in cases in Dublin, many areas of the country are now weeks without a case.

A county by county breakdown of confirmed cases in Ireland shows that as of July 20 Sligo, Kerry and Clare are the three counties that have gone the longest stretch without cases since the pandemic started- 30 days.

Following close behind are is Laois with a record of 28 days in a row without cases, Leitrim (23 consecutive days) and Longford (days).

Tipperary recorded no new cases for two weeks straight on July 20.
