Mining recovery bolsters nervous market

It's already shaping up to be another volatile week on the markets. After yesterday's 80 point fall on the FTSE 100, today saw a 96.3 point increase, with the index closing at 5885.2. Tomorrow promises to be a nervy time too, ahead of the key US Federal Reserve meeting.

The market is expecting an interest rate cut of at least 50 basis points, and there could be trouble if it doesn't get it.

Even a late rumour this afternoon that a US bank - said to be JP Morgan - had run up major losses in derivatives trading did not seem to disturb the market mood unduly.

Miners were once again one of the main influences on the index. The power supply problems which have disrupted production in South Africa seem to be getting closer to being resolved. Lonmin, one of the mining groups affected, said it had been told power levels would be back to 90% of the normal level later this week, although it would take four weeks to fully stabilise the power network. Lonmin, up 24p to £28.92, said it would lose around 15,000 saleable ounces of platinum because of the problems.

Other miners also recovered, with Anglo American adding 143p to £26.08. Xstrata, tipped as a takeover target for Brazil's Vale or Anglo, or both, rose 207p to £37.19.

Morrison Supermarkets added 1.75p to 296.25p despite vague talk of a share placing, while British Airways climbed 16p to 329p after a UBS buy note.

Among the fallers, Alliance & Leicester lost 25p to 700p after revealing higher write-offs on structured investment vehicles. Hedge fund manager Man Group fell 5.5p to 530p after Stanley Fink, its non-executive deputy chairman, sold 2.4m shares at 536p each.

Finally, for a change of pace, news of another banking scandal, which so far seems to have passed unnoticed by the wider market.
