Minimum price for booze begins in Wales with fines of up to £1,000 for those flouting law

All alcohol sold in Wales from today must cost at least 50 pence per unit, with fines for any retailer breaking the new law.

The new rules apply to bars, pubs, shops but also to street parties and village fetes.

One unit of alcohol is the equivalent of half a pint of beer, or a single shot of spirits.

A small glass of wine is the equivalent of 1.5 units of alcohol.

It means the cheapest price for a bottle of wine, of an average strength and size, will now be around £4.69.

A can of lager will not be able to cost less than £1.22 and a 70cl bottle of vodka or gin must be at least £14 to comply with the new law.

Prices for cheaper drinks will also rise and it will have an impact on offers in supermarkets.

The minimum price is worked out using a simple formula of 50 person multiplied by the strength of the alcohol multiplied by the volume.

A similar minimum pricing for alcohol law was introduced in Scotland in May 2018.

A study suggested drinking has fallen as a result with research from the British Medical Journal suggesting the amount of alcohol purchased per person per week has fallen by 1.2 units.

People can cross the border to England, though, to avoid paying the minimum price for alcohol.

In January, the Alcohol Health Alliance urged the chancellor to raise taxes on alcohol to pay for more nurses and police.

Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, chiar of the alliance, said alcohol is "64 per cent cheaper than it was 30 years ago and its availability at these prices is encouraging more of us to drink at unhealthy levels".

Findings published by Sheffield University in 2019 showed that cuts in alcohol duty since 2012 had led to a further 1,969 additional deaths.
