Minimart staff praised for keeping cash left by tourist

A Brazillian tourist never dreamed of getting back her cash totalling almost 100,000 baht left at a minimart until she was told later that it was in good hands.

Paula Spindler and her family were travelling to Krabi in a van on Saturday. They made a stop on the way to buy raincoats at a convenience store in the compound of a PT petrol station in Muang district of Samut Songkhram province.

She went back to the van parked outside without realising that she had left behind two envelopes containing 41,000 baht in cash and US$1,562 (about 50,000 baht) there, according to a Jor Sor 100 report.

Minimart cashier Pailin Seesod found the envelopes near a counter. A check from CCTV footage found they belonged to the foreign customer so she contacted the Jor Sor 100 traffic radio network to locate the owner. She also went to Samut Sakhon police station to register what she had found with police.

Police checked the registration plate of the van from the CCTV footage which gave Jor Sor 100 a lead to contact the driver and the guide of the tourist. The guide then told the family the goods news.

The guide, whose name was not identified, told the traffic radio that the tourist was upset after realising she had forgotten the cash somewhere. However, she decided to move on to Krabi as planned as rooms had been reserved for the family.

Ms Spinder was touched when she was informed by Jor Sor 100 that Ms Pailin had kept the money for her. She will pick it up at Jor Sor 100 when she returns to Bangkok on Thursday.

"You've made my whole year a very happy one and I'm very, very grateful to her and her honesty," Jor Sor 100 on Monday quoted her as saying. "I can't thank her enough and with tears in my eyes, please tell her 'Thank you'."
