Miniature Hakata dolls in capsules to be sold for 10,000 yen in Japan

FUKUOKA -- Miniature Hakata dolls will be sold in a "gacha-gacha" capsule vending machine for 10,000 yen (88 dollars) each in Fukuoka on Friday.

When encapsulated dolls of this kind were sold in January at the same price, all 30 sold out in less than 15 minutes. This time, 100 pieces will be prepared by six young craftsmen of a Hakata doll commerce and industrial cooperative association.

In the hope of conveying the dolls' appeal to young generations, the association decided to sell miniature versions of them in gacha-gacha machines during the Kougei Expo in Fukuoka in November. Kougei Expo is an annual exhibition of traditional Japanese crafts from around the nation.

The dolls in the capsules will be about five centimeters tall. One depicts Sugawara no Michizane, a historical scholar-statesman. Another, called Sanmen Daikokuten, is a single piece that depicts three different gods.

Sales will start at 11 a.m. at Marine Messe Fukuoka in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka.
