A mini heatwave is set to return to London just days after heavy showers brought an end to a record-breaking dry spring.
London could be hotter than a number of Mediterranean holiday destinations this weekend as temperatures could reach 26C.
The Met Office has forecast that the capital could be hotter than Athens, the Spanish party island of Ibiza, the Greek island of Kos on Friday if temperatures reach 25C.
After a wet Tuesday, the sun returned to London on Wednesday morning, although forecasters say overcast conditions are expected to return on Thursday.
The Met Office has also predicted four days of sun from Friday, with temperatures expected to remain above 20C through the weekend.
Meanwhile, BBC Weather has posted an even more positive forecast on its website, predicting that the mercury could reach 26C in London on Saturday.
The forecaster has predicted six days of sunny spells starting on Friday and running into next week.
The Met Office’s average maximum temperature for May is 19 degrees, so conditions will be warmer than usual.
England had its driest start to spring in March and April since 1956, with half the expected rainfall in April and only a quarter of the long-term average in March, Met Office figures show.
According to the forecaster, until Friday night, Leuchars in Fife went 34 days without rain, while people in Bradford, West Yorkshire, did not see rain for 31 days.
The UK has already experienced more than 500 hours of sunshine this spring — more than the whole of last summer.
