MINI-lovers who are not so fond of its new Union Jack lights must pay to have them changed in Northern Ireland.
The new LED rear light design comes as standard on all models sold throughout the UK.
But in the Republic of Ireland buyers have a choice of the flag or plain - and they don’t have to pay for it.

A BMW group UK spokesperson explained: “This is to do with the fact that NI is part of the UK and so takes UK spec cars.
“The south has its own specifications for MINI, which are different.
“In the south the standard spec of the car has a conventional halogen lighting system front and rear.

“This rear light does not have the Union Jack design.
“Customers there can upgrade to the high-tech LED lights as a cost option.
“The only LED rear light has the Union Jack design.
“In the UK, the standard spec includes the upgraded LED lights, which includes the rear Union Jack.
“This cannot be changed at the factory, but only as an aftermarket replacement, at a cost to the customer,” they added.

In terms of cost, customers should be expected to fork out at least £500 for parts and labour to have the lights changed - though this could vary as different retailers charge different rates BMW said.
