'Minecraft' VR Officially Shuts Down; End of Support Takes Game Away From Headsets, Platforms

One of the biggest changes to the long-running top-selling video game "Minecraft" recently took place as Mojang has ended its support for the virtual reality port of the sandbox title.

While the announcement is no longer new, support for the port was originally set to shut down earlier in March, but Mojang chose to allow several weeks more for gamers to enjoy it.

Since the official announcement last year, the shutdown of this VR version of "Minecraft" was set to be inevitable, but players who stayed with the game had hoped that the port could stay around for much longer.

'Minecraft' VR Is Officially Shut Down

Mojang has given the world the chance to immerse themselves in the blocky world of "Minecraft," giving players a chance to experience it through virtual reality. Instead of seeing it through a screen, players were able to access it in the immersive experience of VR, but that is no longer the case for the renowned title.

The company has announced earlier today that it is now ending support for Vivecraft, a version of "Minecraft" that transformed the experience for users on the SteamVR platform. While only a mod, it was an official port of the sandbox game for the virtual reality platform that offered the experience to different compatible headsets.

That being said, Mojang did not reveal the exact reason why it took down "Minecraft" VR on different platforms, considering that the game's sales are growing year after year.

End of Support for All VR Platforms

While there are plenty of games and experiences available on the virtual and mixed reality platform, a massive game like "Minecraft" is a significant loss. On its own, "Minecraft" is already regarded to be the largest game in the world and the bestselling title for many years now as the experience available on multiple platforms already.

Last year, the company announced that the game's latest update on the PlayStation VR version is already its last. The company only said that their support for VR and MR devices "has come to an end," with Mojang previously claiming that they would shut down the experience come March 2025.

The shut down may have been late, but it was not exactly off the table for Mojang. The company has since assured that players who have built their world on "Minecraft's" VR version and those who have in-game purchases and Minecoin currency can still access them via the non-VR/MR version of the game.
