Mojang has officially confirmed that "Minecraft" is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 as a dedicated release, giving the block-building game its first native version built specifically for Nintendo's newest hardware.
The announcement puts an end to months of speculation that followed the game's absence from Switch 2's initial launch lineup last year.
'Minecraft' Is Getting an Official Nintendo Switch 2 Version
According to a press release from Mojang, "Minecraft" is getting an official Nintendo Switch 2-specific version later this year, offering a native version of the game for the platform.
Rumors about a Switch 2-specific version began building after "Minecraft" appeared in the ESRB classification database for the console in the weeks leading up to Nintendo's June 9 Direct presentation, where the game was officially confirmed. Since then, Mojang has continued rolling out additional details, most recently confirming the game's full release date and feature set through its own website.
Up until now, Switch 2 owners could only play "Minecraft" through backward compatibility with the original Switch version, meaning the game ran with the same visual fidelity it always had rather than taking advantage of the newer hardware.
The dedicated Switch 2 release changes that, giving Mojang a chance to properly optimize the game for Nintendo's more powerful console.
Will Mojang Improve Features From OG Switch 'Minecraft'?
The current Switch version of "Minecraft" has carried a reputation for technical issues over the years. This includes frequent Microsoft account sign-in errors, noticeable performance lag, occasional freezing, and inconsistent draw distance that sometimes causes chunks to load directly in front of players.
While Mojang hasn't explicitly addressed frame rate or load time improvements, the Switch 2 version's headline feature strongly suggests better performance overall, Polygon reports.
That headline feature is "Vibrant Visuals," a graphical overhaul first introduced in 2025 that adds enhanced lighting, improved shadow effects, and other visual upgrades the original Switch hardware simply wasn't powerful enough to run.
Vibrant Visuals will be enabled by default on the new version, though players can switch it off if preferred, and it will be automatically disabled during split-screen play.
The platform exclusive "Super Mario" Mash-Up Pack is also getting refreshed to take full advantage of the new visual system. This will bring an updated version of its custom Mario-themed world, complete with music and skins tied to locations like Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza.
When Is 'Minecraft' Switch 2 Version Coming?
Mojang confirmed "Minecraft" for Nintendo Switch 2 will officially launch on October 27, 2026.
Players who already own "Minecraft" on the original Switch will have access to a digital upgrade path once the new version releases, along with the ability to carry over existing save data, though Mojang has not yet detailed exactly how that upgrade process will work.
Pricing for the Switch 2 version has not been confirmed either, and it remains unclear whether existing Switch owners will receive any kind of discount when upgrading.
Mojang has said more details will follow closer to launch, giving fans a few more months to learn exactly how the upgrade path and any potential support for Switch 2-specific features, like Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, will ultimately work once the game arrives in October.
