Mojang Studios has officially unveiled Minecraft Dungeons 2, the long-awaited sequel to its 2020 dungeon-crawling spinoff, with a fall 2026 release window confirmed across all major platforms.
The announcement arrived on March 21, 2026 via an official trailer released during Minecraft Live, alongside a number of other announcements including the new Minecraft World theme park in London. The game is confirmed for PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The announcement trailer is light on gameplay, instead focusing on the game’s atmosphere. Mojang’s official description teases a new unnamed threat descending upon the world, promising “high-stakes encounters” and “never-before-seen locations.” No specific release date beyond fall 2026 has been given, and wishlisting is already live on all relevant stores.
The original Minecraft Dungeons launched in May 2020 as a top-down action RPG developed by Mojang Studios and Double Eleven, with the game peaking at over 25 million players across all platforms. Development for the game wrapped up in November 2022, leaving the franchise dormant since. The game initially leaked in 2025 under the name “Project Spicewood” and pointed to a mid-2026 target.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 on Nintendo Switch
Alongside all current generation platforms, the game is also releasing on Nintendo Switch. While the decision to include a Switch release is pragmatic, given the large install base still on the last generation console, it does highlight the absence of both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. Both Sony and Microsoft’s last generation offerings outclass the Switch in compute performance and would easily run the game, especially with their pro variants.
The omission likely comes down to development costs of porting the game to the older consoles, especially since Microsoft will have the data on exactly how many Xbox One users have moved on to the Series X|S over the years.
Minecraft Dungeons builds upon the immense success of the original, and is set to release in Fall of 2026. Further details, including gameplay footage and a firm release date is expected in the coming months ahead of the release.
