Minecraft developers do not ‘support or allow’ NFTs

There hasn’t been a more intense games industry hot topic than the ongoing conversation regarding NFT implementation. Not in recent memory, anyway. Massive platforms like Steam and PlayStation aren’t supporting NFTs, and neither will Minecraft.

On Thursday, Mojang shared a guidelines update clarifying its stance on implementing NFTs, blockchain technology, and cryptocurrencies within Minecraft servers.

“To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications,” Mojang said. “Nor may Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset.”

Later in the post, Mojang addresses third-party companies that have begun selling world files, skin packs, and other assets related to Minecraft.

“NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a scenario of the haves and the have-nots,” Mojang continues. “Blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications, nor may they be utilized to create NFTs associated with any in-game content, including worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods.”

It’s a pretty cut-and-dry statement. Not at all surprising either, given other studios and publishers like Ubisoft, Behavior Interactive, Team17, and many more faced immense fan blowback over NFT integration.
