Mindy Kaling has spoken out about the lack of diversity in this year’s Oscar nominations while attending the ceremony.
Ahead of the 92nd Academy Awards, the actor-writer – who is presenting – was asked by Variety about the fact this year’s nominations were low on representation in the acting categories.
“It would be nice if there were more people that were nominated of colour,” she said.
“I have to say, I truly love some of the nominated performances tonight – Brad Pitt, Laura Dern, Saoirse [Ronan] – but there’s also been so many other incredible performances: Jodie Turner-Smith, Daniel [Kaluuya]. I think we’ll have more next year. I’m hopeful.”
Harriet star Cynthia Erivo is the only non-white actor to be nominated.
Kaling also said she was surprised that Greta Gerwig was not nominated for Best Director – a category that features just men.
“Little Women was my favourite movie, so I was surprised,” she said, adding that she voted for Gerwig.
