Mindless yobs trash Aintree racecourse but bosses vow Grand National will go ahead

Bosses have vowed the Grand National will still go ahead as promised after mindless yobs broke in and trashed Aintree racecourse this morning.

The shameless vandals used a vehicle to smash through a security gate of the world famous racecourse at 6.45am.

Shocking pictures shows the appalling damage and deep tyre marks on the the usually immaculate grass.

It is believed the vehicle was driven onto the racetrack and part of the white perimeter fences were snapped off.

However a spokesman for Aintree Racecourse insisted that the damage will not affect the planned event.

The first day of the Randox Grand National is due to kick off on Thursday, with thousands of people - from all over the world - expected to attend the three day racing festival.

Millions of people will also be tuning in at home to watch the races.

A spokesman said: "We are working closely with the police on this matter.

"This certainly won’t affect a fantastic three days in Liverpool’s sporting and social calendar.”

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "We are appealing for information following an incident of criminal damage at Aintree Racecourse, Ormskirk Road, Aintree reported this morning, Saturday 30 March.

"At 6.45am, it was reported that damage had been found to a perimeter gate and on the course. It is not believed that anything was stolen and no injuries were caused. 

"It is initially believed that the damage was a caused by a car driven onto the site.

This was the Grand National day at Aintree 2018


"Extensive CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing, working closely alongside the course owners."

Months of preparation has gone into the annual event, with organisers beginning to plan for the next years race the Monday after the previous National.

And The Jockey Club takes great pride in the racecourse with a dedicated team responsible for site maintenance, to make sure it is ready for the huge crowds.

One of the most important aspects of the racecourse is its 250 acres of grass - 75 acres of which makes up the three race courses- the Hurdle course, the Mildmay Steeplechase and the Grand National course.

It is understood that eight people are tasked with maintaining the pristine course throughout the year - to prepare for the National spectacle.

Mark Mackin the operations facilities manager previously told the ECHO: “The Jockey Club take great pride in the customer experience visitors have at our sites.

“We work extremely hard in regards to site presentation and we hope this shines through.
