Mindless yob drove through SEVENTEEN red lights during East Lancs Road police chase

A drove through 17 sets of red lights during a 125mph police chase down East Lancashire Road.

Adrian Knight sped the 26 miles from Windle in St Helens to the village of Little Lever in Bolton in just 25 minutes.

The 42-year-old - who has 42 convictions for 72 offences - had only been banned from driving two weeks previously.

Yet he failed to stop after crashing into a young woman's car and reached terrifying speeds on the 60mph dual carriageway.

Liverpool Crown Court heard Danielle Dooley was driving her Renault Scenic at around 7.50pm on April 29 this year.

Paul Blasbery, prosecuting, said she joined the East Lancs, at its junction with Green Leach Lane in Haresfinch, St Helens.

But she had to slam on to avoid hitting Knight's Vauxhall Insignia, which "skimmed" the passenger side of her car, making a loud noise.

Knight raced off towards Liverpool, leaving her unharmed but with a £1,344 bill for damage, before the police were alerted.

A police officer had to drive at 113mph just to gain sight of Knight, who hit 123mph as he approached Windle Island.

He undercut cars, turned back at the roundabout, then narrowly missed a parked police car, overtaking it in a right turn lane.

Cars swerved to avoid him as he hit 125mph on the way to Haydock, accelerating across the centre line of the road.

Mr Blasbery said he took the 40mph Liverpool Road to Ashton-in-Makerfield at 80mph, driving on the wrong side of the road.

Knight overtook two lorries on a potentially blind bend, then shot down 30mph Warrington Road to Lodge Lane at 70mph.

The court heard the top surface of part of the road had been removed during works, but he travelled at 60mph on the base layer.

Rejoining the East Lancs, he travelled at 110mph on stretches of the road with speed limits of 50mph and 60mph.

At one point near Golborne he turned onto a 'no entry' service road, before eventually reaching Little Lever.

The police officer was told to halt his pursuit due to the dangerousness of the chase and arrival of a force helicopter.

Knight ditched his car in Foundry Street and fled to a Spar store, where he was spotted, then ran off but was caught.

In a police interview he claimed he didn't realise he was disqualified as he was appealing against a conviction.

He also suggested he had "just panicked" and didn't recall hitting Ms Dooley's car at the beginning of the chase.

Knight, of Outwood Road, Radcliffe, admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance.

The court heard his record includes violence, threatening behaviour, breaching court orders, drugs, stalking and harassment.

He also has multiple convictions for dangerous driving, drink driving, careless driving and driving while disqualified.

Claire Brocklebank, defending, said "remorseful" Knight had previously been accused of rape, but was cleared after a trial.

She said: "He has come away from that experience feeling that his side of the story is often not taken seriously at first by police.

"It's something that has weighed heavily upon him in subsequent interactions with the police."

Ms Brocklebank said her client's gran died "a few years ago", which along with the rape allegation, affected him greatly.

She said he suffered from stress and anxiety and was on medication for depression, but now wanted to stay out of crime.

Judge Gary Woodhall said Knight had talked about the latest incident being "a moment of madness" in a pre-sentence report.

He said: "This was not a moment of madness. This was a long, persistent piece of deliberate, dangerous driving."

The judge jailed Knight for 15 months and banned him from the road for three years and five months.
