'Mindless' vandals cause £6k worth of damage to museum door weeks before reopening

A museum that has remained closed throughout the pandemic has been dealt a £6,000 blow ahead of reopening.

The Fusilier Museum, in Bury, is set to open its doors for the first time in 15 months on June 26.

However, those doors will first have to be replaced after the glass entrance was damaged earlier this week.

In a post on Facebook on Wednesday evening (June 2), a spokesman for the museum wrote: "Thank you to the mindless individual/s who tried to break into the museum last night!

"They weren’t successful but they did make a mess of our entrance doors which will cost about £6k to fix! Just what we need after being closed for the last 15 months with no income!

"We’re aiming still to re-open on the 26th June and if anybody did see anything please get in touch!"

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, marketing manager Gini Wilde added: "It's not great. We've had the odd theft where people have taken slates off the roof but no one's attempted the front door like that. It was a bit of a shock.

"We're all really excited to reopen at the end of this month and this puts a bit of a dampener on it really.

"We've had 15 months of no income. We have a crowdfunding page and we wanted to use that money to get us through the next few months but it's going to have to be spent on fixing doors.

"It's very frustrating."

The Fusilier Museum is home to the collections of the XX Lancashire Fusiliers and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Together they record over 300 years of history and heritage of the people who served and continue to serve in the regiments.
