Mindhunter easter egg teases infamous serial killer for season 3

Where will Mindhunter go next?

The Netflix crime series returned for a critically-acclaimed second season that saw Holden Ford ( Jonathan Groff ) and Bill Tench ( Holt McCallany ) investigate the gruesome cases of the Atlanta Child Murders , the BTK Killer , and enter the dark mind of cult leader Charles Manson.

In addition, the characters struggled with personal issues - including Wendy Carr ( Anna Torv ) finding romance, and Bill struggling with his creepy son Brian - who did something that mirrors a horrifying real-life case .

But where next in season 3? Season 2 has included an easter egg hint of where the show will go next.

In one scene, Wendy is discussing potential serial killers to interview and has a board with potential subjects on.

One of the killers displayed is John Wayne Gacy.

The likelihood of Gacy receiving a focus in later episodes is amplified by the fact that John Douglas - the real-life FBI agent whose experiences the series and character of Holden are based on - actually interviewed Gacy extensively on his actions.

Gacy was convicted for raping, torturing and murdering at least 33 teenage boys in his home town in the state of Illinois.

He was also infamous for his public appearances in a clown costume for charity events, earning him the moniker of "Killer Clown".

All of his known murders were committed in his own ranch house, where he killed the majority of them by methods of asphyxiation and strangulation.

He was executed by lethal injection on May 10, 1994.

One killer sure to get more focus is the BTK Killer after that shocking finale ending.

Mindhunter season 2 is available now on Netflix.
