Mindfulness Tuition service tackles mental health problems among young people

An online tutoring platform has launched a Mindfulness Tuition service, aimed at helping to tackle mental health problems among young people, after a survey of 2,130 parents revealed that more than half of children aged 10-16 years old (54%) have been struggling with their mental health this year.

The service, launched by TutorHouse.co.uk, will allow parents and students to easily find tutors who are trained in mental health so that they can receive one-to-one mindfulness sessions either in person or virtually. The cost of mindfulness training is dependent on the tutor, however TutorHouse.co.uk anticipates that an hour long session will cost £25 to £35.

Further results from the survey show that more than two thirds (67%) of parents with children aged 10-16 years old had noticed a negative change in their child’s behaviour during lockdown, and nearly half (48%) said that their children were communicating with them less.

More than half of parents believe their children are struggling with their mental health as 43% of parents listed ‘general low moods’ as their main concern, while one in ten (11%) felt that their children had been exhibiting symptoms of depression.

The mindfulness sessions could involve tutors talking through the events of the past year and how this has made the student feel, as well as going through different mindfulness exercises including CBT therapy, breathing exercises and keeping a mindfulness journal to find a technique that works best for their student.

It is also possible to book a standard tutoring session, such as maths or English, with a tutor that has received mindfulness training to give students the opportunity to discuss their mental wellbeing in a situation that isn’t solely focused on it. Tutors with this qualification will have it listed on their profile.

Mental Health services in the UK are already under strain and in England, the Centre for Mental Health has predicted that one fifth of the population, including 1.5 million children and young people under 18 will need new or additional mental health support as a direct consequence of the ongoing crisis*.

Tutor House is the UK’s leading tutoring platform, offering private home and remote tuition for all Primary, GCSE, A-Level & University subjects. On a mission to change the way students and parents find trusted and qualified tutors. Their goal is to make tutoring affordable for all and allow every single student to benefit from individual tutoring, group retake courses and educational support, no matter their level or ability.

Alex Dyer, founder of TutorHouse.co.uk, said: “With their daily routines massively upturned, a new normal that is very far from normal and plenty of uncertainty still waiting along the way, 2020 has been a tough year for children, especially for those who have transitioned to different schools and key stages.

“This will have already taken a massive toll on the wellbeing for a lot of young people throughout the UK and with mental health services already under strain, we are hoping to help out by giving students an opportunity to talk about their mental health in a low-pressure environment from their own home.”
