Milwaukee shooting: Police hunt shooter after eight injured in shopping mall incident

Police are hunting a shooter after multiple people were shot at a shopping centre in America.

Several people have been shot at the complex in Wauwatosa, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber said in a statement that seven adults and one teenager were injured in the incident.

They were transported to hospital but the extent of their injuries is unknown at the moment, Mr Weber said.

A shooter is "at large", according to the mayor.

Wauwatosa Police said they believe the suspect could be a while male in his 20s or 30s based on statements from witnesses.

Local news reports said that officers were responding to a "very active situation" and a number of people were taken away in ambulances.

The shopping centre has reportedly been placed on lockdown and people inside given a warning to "shelter in place".

Photos and video from the scene show a large number of police officers at the mall.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Wauwatosa Police, and the Wisconsin National Guard are all in attendance, reports say.

Back in February, Mayfair Mall was the site of a shooting in which a police officer shot and killed Alvin Cole, a black 17-year-old, Sky News reports.

Officers claimed Cole was fleeing from police. Police officer Joseph Mensah, who is also black, said he shot Cole because Cole pointed a gun at him.

The mall has been the target of demonstrations in the wake of the killing.

About 75 police officers have descended on the mall today.

Brookfield Properties, Mayfair's Mall management company, said: "We are disheartened and angered that our guests and tenants were subject to this violent incident today.

"We are thankful for our partners at the Wauwatosa Police Department and we are cooperating with them as their investigation develops."
