Milwaukee reliever Abner Uribe has been suspended for six games and starter Freddy Peralta for five following their involvement in a brawl during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Rays outfielder Jose Siri received a three-game suspension, later reduced to two, and Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy was suspended for two games. All four individuals were also fined for their roles in the altercation.
Murphy began serving his suspension immediately, with associate manager Rickie Weeks taking over for him during the game against the Rays. Uribe and Peralta have appealed their suspensions, pending a resolution by MLB special assistant John McHale Jr.
Siri dropped his appeal as part of an agreement to reduce his suspension to two games, serving the first game as the Rays lost 7-1. MLB cited Peralta for intentionally throwing at Siri and Murphy for inappropriate conduct towards umpires in addition to Peralta's actions. Uribe was disciplined for causing a benches-clearing incident, while Siri was penalized for his actions during the altercation.
The incident stemmed from Peralta hitting Siri with a pitch in the sixth inning of the previous game, leading to ejections for Peralta and Murphy. Tensions escalated when Siri and Uribe exchanged words after an at-bat, resulting in a physical altercation that cleared both benches.
Siri, who revealed a bruise on his leg from the incident, expressed confusion over Uribe's actions, stating that he did not believe he had done anything wrong. He emphasized that celebrations in the game are common and denied any intention to show up Peralta.
Murphy had been ejected from the Brewers' two previous games, including a dispute in a close loss to the Rays. The ongoing tensions between the two teams culminated in the altercation that led to the suspensions and fines.
Both the Brewers and the Rays are expected to address the repercussions of the incident as they move forward in the season.
