Milton man builds 'give or take' food box to stop local families from going hungry

A miniature foodbank has opened to keep Milton families from going hungry this winter - and it only took a couple pieces of wood and a little bit of honesty.

The tiny wooden 'house' on Westray Street is filled with tinned goods and the door can be opened at any time by local families who need it most.

The idea of the 'Give or Take' food box was started by Alex O'Kane, after years of listening to heartbreaking stories of people in his community going hungry.

Alex, who runs the No1Seems2Care Facebook page, told Glasgow Live:  "I founded and ran the Milton Food HUT voluntary help page in 2014 and closed it in 2018 as I couldn't find a reliable food source.

"I was literally collecting tins of food every week from family and friends. I also founded No1seems2care in 2017 and wanted to address a wider variety of problems that local people faced.

"But request for food kept on coming and it's heartbreaking to turn people away especially people that I know. I have lost sleep at night thinking about people that I haven't been able to get emergency food for. I take this stuff really personally as food is not a luxury, it's a necessity.

Anyone passing by can open the door to donate tinned goods to the food box, and Alex hopes the spot will manage to be a permanent fixture in the garden - and spark more food boxes across the city.

He said: "People can take food in emergencies or leave food if the box looks empty.

"I will leave it out as much as possible over the Christmas period and if it works I will keep it there all year.

"It seems like a common sense thing to do, if these types of food boxes worked and could be found in lots of different areas they would make a real difference."

Alex says his main concern is that the box could becomes vandalise but takes comfort in knowing how well it has been received so far.

"I am aware thats its unlikely to be that simple and the box could be vandalised or unused. But it might work and that is worth trying," he said.

"I also hope it might inspire others in different areas and also encourage the authorities to improve food provision especially in the north of Glasgow.

"I often tell people that there is no shame in poverty, the shame is that poverty exists in 21st century Scotland."

"I still dish out food parcels periodically from my home but i thought I would build a food box and make it easily accessible in my front garden. "
