Millwall player ratings: Thompson exceptional as Tunnicliffe shines in victory against West Brom

Millwall boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation in the Championship with a 2-0 win against West Bromwich Albion at The Den this afternoon (Saturday).

A Ryan Tunnicliffe goal and an Ahmed Hegazi own goal gave Neil Harris' men victory as the Lions moved above Reading into 20th position in the Championship, one point ahead of Rotherham United, who sit third from bottom.

Here's how Jake Sanders rated the Millwall players at The Den.

Millwall player ratings: Thompson exceptional, Tunnicliffe shines and Pearce solid.

Dave Martin

A relatively straightforward afternoon. Had one save of note to make and acrobatically denied Johansen's spectacular effort. His third clean sheet in four Championship outings for Millwall – 7

Mahlon Romeo

Massive improvement from his defensive showing at Elland Road last weekend. Romeo was faultless, apart from one poor header in the second-half and provided great support for Wallace going forward. Crossing was much-improved, too – 8

Millwall's confirmed team to face West Brom: Ben Thompson shakes off injury to start at The Den

Alex Pearce

Cruised through the game, dominating Gayle and never really looked under any pressure, apart from once in the first-half when he was beaten too easily. Comfortably dealt with everything that came his way – 8

Jake Cooper

Was having a great game until he conceded a penalty for a foul on Gayle. On another day he could have seen red – and was thankful that Rodriguez dragged his spot-kick wide – 7

James Meredith

One of his best performances this season. Dealt with Robson-Kanu relatively well and made a wonderful last-ditch challenge on the Welsh international in the second-half to deny a certain goal – 7

Jed Wallace

Dominated Townsend with a series of dazzling runs. Never stopped looking to be positive and could have capped off his afternoon with a goal, but Johnstone kept out his long-range effort. Deservedly left the pitch to a standing ovation from the jubilant home fans – 8

Ryan Tunnicliffe

If you buy a ticket, you don't win the raffle. And Tunnicliffe certainly bought a ticket on 30 minutes, crisply firing Millwall ahead. Seems to be relishing his role next to Leonard and it was another workmanlike performance – 8

How Brentford, Millwall and QPR compare for the fees paid to agents over the past year

Ryan Leonard

Started the game slowly, gifting the ball away twice inside the opening 10 minutes. Was often sloppy in possession, but improved as the game progressed and made some crucial interceptions – 7

Ben Marshall

That goal at Leeds United last weekend looks to have installed some much-needed confidence. Worked so hard and some of his crossing was reminiscent of last season – 7

Ben Thompson

Always looking to make things happen, not everything came off, but it was another mesmerising performance from Thompson. Created one excellent chance for Gregory in the opening period, but he failed to hit the target. Thompson did get his assist on 66 minutes as his cross was turned into his own net by Hegazi to double Millwall's lead. Came closing to scoring himself late on, but Johnstone saved well before – 8

Lee Gregory

Worked extremely hard and led the line very impressively. Should have finished Thompson's excellent pullback but skewed over. Had an even better opportunity to make it 3-0, but Johnstone pulled off a stunning save from point-blank range, although Gregory should have scored – 7

Subs:

Aiden O'Brien (Jed Wallace – 85)

Introduced for a late run out – N/A
