The FA have approved in principle an application for breakaway team London City Lionesses to take the place of Millwall Lionesses in the Women’s Championship next season.
Millwall announced this week that the board of the Millwall Lionesses had decided to end their affiliation with the club and start a new entity called London City Lionesses.
Millwall Lionesses will remain as a team and be run by Millwall Community Trust. But the London City Lionesses will take their place in the Championship for the 2019-20, subject to certain conditions being met.
The FA said: “The FA women’s football board has, in principle, approved applications made by Millwall Lionesses Football Club to transfer its licence to participate in the FA Women’s Championship to a new entity; and change its playing name to London City Lionesses F.C.
“Each application is subject to certain conditions being satisfied and we are working with the club to help ensure that all necessary approvals can be obtained and related steps completed before the commencement of the 2019/20 season. If the relevant conditions are satisfied, the team will continue to participate in the FA Women’s Championship.”
