Millwall boss Gary Rowett has spoken of his disappointment at his team’s performance in the Championship clash against Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds came out as comfortable 3-1 winners over the Lions, a result which leaves them just one point behind their opponents in the league table.
A brace from Sammy Ameobi and a goal from Ryan Yates were enough to see Chris Hughton’s side take all three points from the game. Ben Thompson got a consolation goal for Millwall in the 89th minute.
Following the match, Rowett delivered a frank assessment of the performance and pinpoints where his team should have done better.
“For the first 20/25 minutes we were just too passive, we looked like we were still in the dressing room. There was no intensity, there was no real aggression to our running to our closing down and that was the disappointing bit,” he told the club’s official website .
“And then we started to get a little bit more on the ball and started to impose ourselves a little bit more on the game and at that point, I think we were on top and we concede a really, really poor goal.
“I spoke to the players about it, they’ve got dangerous players no matter where they are in the league, they’ve got dangerous players in forward areas but our big part of the game plan was to make sure you keep Ameobi on his right foot and not allow him to go inside and twice we just allow him to waltz inside.
“[They were] two good finishes, I think the first one gets a deflection, the second one is an excellent finish, but I’ve seen him do that many times, you can’t allow that.
“I think that was the disappointment, two goals that were completely avoidable and a set-piece where we don’t do our jobs and it summed the game up up until we scored.”
