Millions to see State Pension payment increase from April

State Pension is expected to increase for millions of people from next April.

The rise could be at least 2.5 percent as each year as it is determined by the triple lock rule.

This the UK government's commitment to increase the value of the benefit delivered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) by at least 2.5%.

Therefore the pensions triple lock, introduced in 2010, ensures the UK State Pension will rise in line with whichever is highest from earnings - inflation or 2.5%.

Currently, however, the earnings element of the rule has been temporarily suspended.

This is because the impact of the coronavirus crisis on wages could have led to an unaffordable rise for the government, the Daily Record reports.

In July, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) said that State Pension could increase by as much as 8.3% due to the guarantee which prompted the rule change.

The latest inflation figures will be announced tomorrow, Wednesday October 20 and State Pension payment rates confirmed by the government in November.

These changes will then be applied at the start of the new financial year in April 2022.

Recent inflation data showed prices in the UK had gone up 3.2 percent for the year to August 2021, but the Bank of England believes that this could increase even more, to as high as four percent for the 12 months to September 2021.

If there is a four percent increase, people receiving the full basic State Pension of £137.60 would get an additional £5.50 per week.

This amounts to a payment of £572.40 per month.

Those receiving the new full State Pension would see their income go from £179.60 each week to £186.78, an extra £7.18.

This amounts to a monthly payment of £747.12.
