Millions of UK motorists are using their parked cars as a way to have some peace and quiet during lockdown, new research suggests.
A survey of 2,000 drivers found that eight per cent are retreating to their stationary cars to have some alone time away from the family – potentially meaning that up to 1.2 million people across the UK are using their parked vehicles as a way of finding some peace and quiet.
More than a fifth of those located in London are using their parked car as a place of solitude, while a further seven per cent are using their car’s infotainment system to listen to music, the radio or a podcast.
More than 20 per cent of Brits are finding innovative new uses for their parked-up cars too, with three per cent using them as places to watch TV on a mobile phone, or another three per cent taking naps in the cabin.
The research, conducted by Skoda, found that though most people are using the living room to work from home, 13 per cent are considering using their cars as a makeshift office. Owners are also taking better care of their cars during lockdown, with 22 per cent cleaning them more regularly.
A spokesperson at Skoda UK said: “The research highlights that whilst we may not be able to currently use our cars in the traditional fashion, they still play a hugely significant part in our everyday lives.
“Multiple USB ports, heated and ventilated seats, air filtration systems, and even massage seats all enhance a car’s appeal, not only when driving but when stationary too.
“These features create a versatile space for individuals and families, even during the current lockdown.”
