Millions of people can get £150 off their council tax due to Covid-19

Millions of households could be eligible to get £150 off their council tax bill.

Local authorities are looking to help those who fall into 'vulnerable' groups.

The government's council tax hardship fund was founded in March, and is available to those who are 'working-age people'.

The funding will support around 2.3 million people who are struggling with their bills due to job and income cuts, the Mirror reports.

It comes as figures reveal more than 1.2million people have fallen into 'severe' debt since March.

The support was first announced during the lockdown in March, but the government has confirmed it still applies.

Can I get a discount through the council tax hardship fund?

The UK's council tax hardship fund, which is worth £500million, was announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak in the Budget in March.

It was introduced to provide relief to those financially impacted by the pandemic.

The support is available to Brits of working age who receive council tax support, also known as a council tax reduction, such as those on Universal Credit or unable to work.

Each local authority is responsible for its own council tax support scheme - based on its budget - but generally, it will be based on what support you already receive, your income, your dependents and how much savings you have.

If you receive the Guarantee Credit Part of Pension Credit you may even get your council tax paid in full.

If you don’t get Guarantee Credit but you have a low income and less than £16,000 in savings, you may still get some help.

Pensioners still need to pay council tax, but they may get a discount if they live alone or are classed as particularly vulnerable.

How do I apply?

To apply, go to the Gov.uk website and follow the instructions for your local authority.
