Millions of Hindus take to the water and cleanse their sins in world's largest pilgrimage

The world’s biggest pilgrimage began today as millions of Hindus took to the water in the northern city of Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) on auspicious Makar Sankranti day during the Kumbh Mela.

Some 15 million were expected to enter the confluence of the sacred Ganges and Yamuna rivers by the end of the day.

By the end of March, up to 120 million will have taken part in the festival, which happens every 12 years.

Hindus believe bathing at the rivers will cleanse their sins and bring salvation.

Sadhus, or ascetics, smeared ash on their bodies as they came out of the water chanting “Mother Ganges”.
