Millions in cash seized, seven men charged as alleged Top End drug syndicate busted

The charges follow the seizure of 132 kilograms of cannabis in September.

Northern Territory detectives have seized almost $2 million in cash and charged seven men following a multi-agency investigation into an alleged drug syndicate.

The seizure follows the discovery in September of 132 kilograms of cannabis allegedly hidden in packages freighted to Darwin from Adelaide.

Detectives at the time said it was the "largest seizure of its type in the Territory" and three men were charged.

Last Thursday, NT police alongside members of the Australian Federal Police, Australian Defence Force and Australian Border Force simultaneously executed 10 search warrants — eight in Darwin and two in undisclosed locations.

Authorities allegedly found $1.95 million in cash, commercial quantities of drugs, and also replica firearms, knuckle dusters and tasers.

"This operation has effectively dismantled a significant criminal syndicate involved in the supply of large amounts of illicit drugs into the community," Detective Superintendent Kerry Hoskins said in a statement.

"The investigation by NT Police's Drug and Organised Crime Division was supported by other agencies to ensure alleged members of the syndicate were arrested at the same time.

"The amount of cash seized is one of the biggest seizures by NT Police."

Seven men were charged with 37 offences including supplying a dangerous drug.

They were due to face the Darwin Local Court today.
