Millionaires begging to pay billions more in tax but Chancellor Rishi Sunak snubs them

A group of super-rich people are begging Rishi Sunak to tax them more to spare the poor.

But the Treasury say they should just write the Government a cheque instead.

Thirty members of Patriotic Millionaires UK wrote an open letter asking the Chancellor to target the 119,000 people with more than £3.6million.

They calculate it would raise £43.7billion, enough to pay for the National Insurance rise twice over, cover the salaries of 50,000 nurses, build 35,000 affordable homes and bump up Universal Credit.

The group’s Julia Davies, 51, a lawyer from Dorset, said: “People who struggle to put food on the table are being hit by NI.

“I don’t pay NI because I earn money from wealth.

"We’re not impacted by the cost of living crisis.

"We are making a serious suggestion to solve the problem.”

Member Gemma McGough added: “It’s time we right the wrongs of an unequal world.”

But Financial Secretary Lucy Frazer told Patriotic Millionaires they are taxed enough already.
