Millionaire Who Snatched Kid’s Hat At US Open Apologises, Says Viral Apology Was Fake

Tennis CEO hat

The millionaire CEO who appeared to snatch a cap from a child at the US Open has issued a cowering apology after his actions went incredibly viral.

Piotr Szczerek, who is the chief executive of a paving firm, took to social media on Monday to apologise for the “huge mistake” he made and claimed that he was “convinced” that tennis player Kamil Majchrzak had given him the hat to give to his own sons.

“Due to the situation that happened during Kamil Majchrzak’s match at the US Open, I would like to unquivocally apologise to the young boy, his family, as well as all the fans and the player himself. I take full responsibility for my extremely poor judgment and hurtful actions,” Szczerek began.

“It was never my intent to steal away a prized memento from the young fan. I became caught up in the moment and the joy of the victory and believed that Majchrzak was handing a hat to me to give to my sons, who had previously asked for autographs. Regardless of what I believed was happening, the actions I took hurt the young boy and disappointed the fans.”

The 50-year-old Polish CEO said that he had sent the hat back to the boy along with “sincere apologies” to his family.

“I hope, at least to a small extent, I was able to repair the harm I caused,” he said.

Following a heap of fake statements floating around social media, Szczerek went on to clarify that this is the only official statement from him, his wife, or associates.

“We did not hire any law firm regarding this matter,” he continued. “All statements appearing online attributed to us were false and were not authored by us or our representatives.”

Szczerek referred to the viral experience as being a “painful but necessary lesson in humility” and vowed to engage in more initiatives which support children and young athletes.

“I believe that only through actions can I rebuild the trust that I have lost,” he concluded.

In case you missed it, the hat-snatching incident went down after Majchrzak’s victory against Russia’s Karen Khachanov. Majchrzak went over to the stands to celebrate his win by meeting fans and signing autographs.

In footage taken of the heartwarming moment, Majchrzak was seen taking off his hat and handing it to a young fan. However, when the tennis pro went to sign another punter’s tennis ball, Szczerek is seen snatching the hat out of the young boy’s hands.

You can check it out below.

However, there was a happy ending. After the footage went incredibly viral, Majchrzak reached out to the young fan — whose name is Brock — to meet him and gift him another hat.

Now that’s what I call handling a situation with grace. I hope Brock feels like an absolute winner with two hats ~and~ the internet on his side.
